Welcome to official Frictional Games wiki. This wiki is a combined effort of the studio and the community, and is a constant work in progress. If you would like to contribute to the wiki, please check out our help section.

HPL Engine

You're probably here for documentation on the HPL Engine, Frictional Games' flagship game engine. The HPL Engine currently has three major iterations available.

HPL1

The first version of the engine was used to create the Penumbra series. Documentation is limited but can be found here.

HPL2

The second version was used to create Amnesia – The Dark Descent, and later Amnesia – A Machine For Pigs on a modified version often referred to as "HPL2.5". You can find resources and documentation for HPL2 here, including downloads for the modding tools and tutorials on how to create your own custom stories.

HPL3

The third version was used to create SOMA. Extensive documentation on how to make custom content using the HPL3 engine can be found here.

A modified version of HPL3 is currently being used for the upcoming Amnesia: Rebirth, and has been nicknamed "HPL3.5".
